Seasons in Tatsugo Town

It’s warm and humid all year round and the average temperature is over 21°C. It has a lot of rain and we get less daily sunlight than other prefectures. Because of that, rare plants proliferate here.

Don’t be sad when it rains. You can enjoy the rain forest, visiting an exhibition, Oshima Tsumugi, exploring weavers or Kokuto shochu distilleries.

Jan-Feb

The temperature doesn’t go below 10°C. It can feel colder, though, because there is often a strong cold sea breeze.

The Hikan cherry trees bloom in February. Green seaweed starts to grow on rocks on the shore and around Heart rock. It means spring is coming.

Mar-Apr

Habu snakes become more active! (Be careful in grassy areas and on paths at night. In Amami we celebrate the start of the sea-swimming season on the 3rd of March in the lunar calendar. It’s still chilly to swim, though! Also we have a traditional event for little girls’ health, during which people dip their feet into the sea.

May-Jun

From the middle of May to the end of June, it’s the rainy season. When it’s over, people in Tatsugo celebrate ‘Hamaore’ during which people do a boat race. Then they pray and dance for good crops on the beach. You might find some glow in the dark mushrooms (Mycena lux-coeli) at the Amami nature centre.

July-Sep

It’s the busiest time of the year. From the end of July there is a Summer festival somewhere each weekend. Tatsugo town summer festival comes first.

Amami Ishikawa frogs and fire flies appear in the Amami Nature Forest.

Obon (The festival of the Dead) is on 13~14th July in the lunar calendar in Amami.

On the 16th we’ve been told not to go into the sea. Our ancestors might take us back with them and also there is a big spring tide. Be careful on the beach. Between July and September we have a lot of typhoons.

People celebrate Arasetsu (Shochogama and Hirasemankai)in Akina Ikusato villagen in the eighth month of the lunar calendar.Lots of people come to see it.

Oct-Dec

Although it’s getting chillier in Amami, you can still hear the sound of the cicadas. We have a sumo match in September, a community sports day in October, a community running relay in November and a normal run.

From the middle to the end of October we have Taneoroshi (people dance and sing around their villiage to wish for a good harvest the following year.) The date isn’t fixed.
