大島紬を作り上げる多くの工程の中のひとつである『泥染め』は、世界で唯一、奄美大島でのみ行われている天然の染色技法です。
まず、チップ状にしたテーチ木(シャリンバイ)を煮出して1週間発酵させた液と、色を定着させるための石灰液に絹糸を交互に浸けて茶褐色に染めます。その後、泥田の中へ。テーチ木に含まれるタンニン酸と、泥の中に含まれる鉄分を化合させ、茶褐色の状態から深みのある黒色へと変化させていきます。
奄美大島の泥田には多くの鉄分が含まれていること、また泥の粒子が細かくてなめらかなことが、奄美大島でのみ泥染めができる理由とのこと。本町には、泥染めにふさわしい約150万年前の粘土地層が残っていたため、泥染めの盛んな地域となったようです。
町内の各工房では、ハンカチやTシャツなどの身近なアイテムで泥染めや藍染め体験ができます。天候に左右されずに楽しめるので雨の日のアクティビティとして人気が高く、雨が多い冬の奄美観光に大変オススメです。
Mud dyeing is a part of processing Oshima Tsumugi.It’s a natural dyeing method in Amami Island.
First,boil chipped teichi tree(Yeddo Hawthorn)bark.Then forment the liquid for a week.Then dip the silk in it and into lime solution alternately.The silk turns reddish brown.After that put it in an iron-rich mud field.Tannic acid in teichi trees and the iron in the mud turn the dyed silk black.Because the iron-rich mud and mud particles are finely smooth.This method of dyeing is very effective.
Tatsugo town has 1.5 million year old clay soil.
You can experience dyeing a handkerchief or a T-shirt at workshops in Tatsugo town.Especially fun on rainy days!
